September 18, 2001-Two Teens Who Fled After Fatality Cited
Two teen-agers involved in a car accident that killed a 16-year-old boy have been cited by Omaha police on suspicion of three misdemeanor charges. John West, 16, and Karly DeLorme, 17, were issued criminal citations Thursday on suspicion of providing false information, obstructing administration of the law, and being minors in possession of alcohol. A preliminary court appearance for both was scheduled for Oct. 10.
West and DeLorme were passengers in the car driven by Stephen Nelson on July 13. Nelson suffered fatal injuries when the car struck a utility pole. DeLorme also was injured in the accident. Police said West and two other teens in the car left the scene without calling 911 or alerting anyone of the incident. Police and rescue crews were summoned by neighbors who heard the accident. Nelson died in the hospital one week after the crash. Police have said alcohol and speed contributed to the accident.
